Contracted service centers are not allowed to release impounded vehicles until authorized by the Police Department. An impounded vehicle is one in which is towed by police authority for causes such as uninsured, suspended registration, expired registration, multiple suspended operations, or certain investigatory purposes.
To have a vehicle released, first the owner must clear the cause of suspension. This also includes checking with your state’s motor vehicle commission/division to ensure that any suspensions have been lifted even after you have paid for insurance or a ticket/summons. Once your vehicle is valid, the Police Department can only release the vehicle to the owner. The owner will need to bring identification, proof of ownership in the form of a registration/title, the impound form (yellow copy), and proof of validity.
