7-5-18 Fatal MVA and Car Fire
On Thursday, July 5th 2018 at 1708hrs the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a car that struck a tree and caught fire on the Parkway southbound, south of interchange 3 in the Alpine NJ section. Officers Timothy Conboy #393, Michael Holland #403, and Antonio Megaro #405 responded. On arrival they found a fully involved vehicle into a tree on the left shoulder and an unconscious male victim laying in the grass. Officers began CPR while the Fire Department, EMS, Paramedics, and medevac were requested. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the victim deceased on the scene while the Alpine NJ Fire Dept extinguished the fire.
It was later determined that the vehicle had traveled out of the left lane onto the grass and then struck a tree at a high rate of speed. A passing civilian motorist stopped and pulled the operator (listed below) from the vehicle as it engulfed in flames and almost burned the driver. Officers arrived shortly thereafter and started treatment. Detectives arrived as well as the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department BCI unit for photos. This is a single vehicle, single occupant collision. Although the investigation is still ongoing, at this time it appears that the operator may have been unconscious prior to the collision however an autopsy by the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office is still pending.
The operator has been identified as Mr. Albert Stanczyk, a 69 year old male from Fort Lee NJ.
