8-9-16 HIKER ASSIST
On Tuesday August 9th, 2016 at approximately 2032hrs the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department received a call reporting that a group of individuals were lost on the hiking trails below State Line Lookout and fatigued. (The State Line Lookout is located in the Alpine NJ Section of the Palisdes Interstate Park). Marine units 1 and 3 responded to the area as well as patrol officers. While searching for the individuals it was learned that they were part of a summer camp for mentally and physically challenged children. They were separated into several groups over a two (2) mile distance and limited cooperation from counselors added to the delay. Marine 3 with the assistance of Marine 1, removed several persons in multiple locations over the course of several hours along the Shore Trail. All units returned to Alpine Boat Basin where at approximately 0300hrs, all members of the group were accounted for. A camp transport van met the group and transported them back to their place of origin. There were a total of 6 adults and 15 children with ages ranging from 15 to 33 were removed. All involved were part of the Romimu Special Programs special needs school located in Monticello NY.
