Capsized Sail Boat Response

On Thursday, June 29th, 2017 at 1040hrs the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department responded to a reported capsized sailboat in the Hudson River north of the Spuyten Dyvil bridge. Marine units 1, 2, and 3 responded and located a group of small sail boats from the Riverdale Yacht Club. One of the sail boats overturned causing the children on board to fall into the river. As marine units arrived, instructors from the school had just removed the children from the water and onto small power vessels. The instructor vessel was overcrowded and taking on water from the weight of the children and therefore officers from this agency transferred the children onto Marine 1 and transported them back to the yacht club.

Marine Units 2 and 3 began escorting the other students back to the yacht club for safety. River swells due to tide change and high winds were approximately three to four feet in height causing unsafe conditions for the small training sail boats being used by the children. Once all boats were back at the yacht club marine units went back in service. North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Marine 1 and NY PD Aviation Air Sea 22 assisted. There were no injuries reported.
