ICING CONDITIONS CAUSE HAVOC ON PIP

On Sunday, January 18th 2015 at 0700hrs officers, motorists, and maintenance crews were surprised by flash icing conditions in the region.  The Palisades Interstate Parkway was innundated with a magnitude of incidents in a short amount of time.

The following incidents occurred:

One 20-car collision with 3 injuries southbound on the Parkway near Hudson Terrace.

8 additional collisions

5 disabled autos

Numerous vehicles stopped and unable to move.

Officers immediately closed southbound lanes on the Parkway to alleviate risks during the ongoing 20 car collision.  Shortly thereafter NY State Police as well as this agency closed the Palisades Interstate Parkway from the Fort Lee entrance ramps to Interchange 10 in Pomona NY.   Officers, tow services, and maintenance crews operated for another 3 hours to clear the incidents and reopen the highway.
